Contra IKEA | This project is the result of a performative series in collaboration with Julie Folly and the Théâtre Vidy (Lausanne, CH).
This experience is based on Théo Mercier’s performance, Affordable solution for a better living. The piece questions the ideological object created by the consumer society, it brings us a reflection on the objects of our daily life. We made images representing constraining objects, the “not practical for everyone” and the absurd. Equipped with some basic furniture bought from IKEA - the leader of the utopia of the practical object - and tools, we started to install and build situations based on constraint. The situations created: a doormat full of nails, a wobbly table, a “backpack” of neon lights, are a critique of consumer society and our dependence on everyday objects. An ordinary object placed in an extraordinary situation becomes completely absurd.
Inspired by a process of experimentation in a defined space, we created not only staged objects, but also image sequences showing constraining and absurd life situations. One sequence shows Thalles walking on a kind of slackline on the floor, while Julie walks with shoes hanging from her feet.
